Fragments

In rooms where people didn't want to go home.

In applause that lasted a little too long.

In livestreams where the chat kept going after the camera cut out.

There is no official version of what happened.

There are only files.

Warnings don't work when what people are being warned against sounds like relief.

This is just a record.

The archive has changed since you opened it.

Warnings sound like relief here.

People who say they remember exactly what they heard, even though none of them heard the same thing.

Two copies. Same name. Different lengths.

Every room remembers the shape of your breathing.

File created: 02:14.

File modified: 02:14.

File accessed: today.

What happened didn't start in the sound.

Not a thousand. Not a hundred.

Forty-three.

The hum from the parking garage filled the room.

And for the first time all day the silence after the work didn't feel empty.

It was waiting.

Some copies differ.

The ventilation hum is not 50Hz today.

Something in them stayed behind.

You didn't notice it right away.

You noticed it in the pauses.

Some sounds arrive before they are played.

It exists in the archive.

No official version exists.

Nobody opened the door.

The file is the same size.

The contents are not.

The applause came in through the ventilation.

The waveform breathes.

Just water and wind and a distant streetcar.

Then I deleted it.

Submission preserved.

people don't want to own things

they want to rent futures they can't carry

every room remembers

the shape of your breathing

In how they'd stop mid-sentence and listen toward hallways, elevators, ventilation shafts, doors.

No verified copy of this exists.

This is one of the unverified copies.

The room confirms receipt.

The archive remembers what you didn't submit.

No dreams.

Just nothing.

It felt like grace.

Then my phone buzzed.
